Running a Calcutta Shouldn't Require a CS Degree
If you've ever tried to run a Calcutta auction with a spreadsheet, a group text, and someone shouting bids across a bar — you know the pain. Someone didn't hear the bid. Someone's spreadsheet crashed. And the commissioner spent more time managing logistics than actually participating.
There's a better way. You can host your Calcutta auction online, for free, with real-time bidding from everyone's phone. Here's how.
What You Need
- A free account on Calcutta Edge
- 5 minutes to set up the session
- A group of friends who want to bid (2 to 50+ people)
That's it. No payment, no trial period, no hidden fees. Hosting is completely free.
Step 1: Create Your Account
Head to calcuttaedge.com and click "Get Started." Email and password — takes 10 seconds.
Step 2: Create an Auction Session
Click "Host" in the navigation bar, then "Create New Session." You'll set up:
- Session name — something your group will recognize ("Jake's MM Pool 2026")
- Tournament — pick from available tournaments (March Madness, golf majors, NFL playoffs, or custom)
- Payout rules — choose a preset (Balanced, Top Heavy, or With Props) or customize the percentage allocated to each round
- Timer settings — set how long each bidding window lasts (15-60 seconds is typical)
- Bid increments — Casual ($5), Standard ($25), or Big Money ($50)
Step 3: Share the Code
Once your session is created, you'll get a 6-character join code (like ABC123). Share it with your group via text, email, or carrier pigeon.
Participants go to calcuttaedge.com/join, enter the code, pick a display name, and they're in. No account required for participants to join — but they'll want one if they want strategy analytics.
Step 4: Run the Auction
As the commissioner, you control everything:
- Start the auction when everyone's in the lobby
- Teams come up one at a time with a countdown timer
- Participants bid from their phones — everyone sees bids update in real time
- Timer expires and the highest bidder wins that team
- Skip teams nobody wants, pause if you need a break
The whole thing runs itself. No spreadsheet updating, no shouting, no confusion about who bid what.
Step 5: Track Results
After the auction, the tournament dashboard shows:
- Bracket view — see which teams won and lost (results sync from ESPN automatically)
- Leaderboard — who's winning the pool based on actual game results
- Settlement — exactly how much each person owes or is owed
- Export — download results as CSV for your records
Why Free?
Calcutta Edge makes money from strategy analytics ($29.99/event) — the tool that tells you which teams are overpriced and which are steals during the auction. The hosting is free because we want every Calcutta auction to run on our platform. The better the hosting experience, the more people discover the strategy tool.
Think of it like this: Zoom is free for meetings, but you pay for the premium features. Except our "meetings" involve yelling about whether Duke is worth $1,500.
Tips for Commissioners
Before the auction:
- Set up the session a day early so people can join the lobby at their convenience
- Use auto-mode if you want the auction to run itself (timer + auto-advance)
- Shuffle the team order so nobody knows what's coming next
During the auction:
- Start with a quick explanation of the payout rules — "Round of 32 is worth 0.5% of the pot, Champion is worth 16%"
- The timer keeps things moving — 30 seconds is the sweet spot for most groups
- You can bid too! Commissioner bidding is built in
After the auction:
- Hit "Sync ESPN" in the tournament dashboard to pull in game results
- Share the leaderboard link with the group so everyone can follow along
